Info: Taito Corporation is a Japanese video game developer and publisher founded in Tokyo in 1953 by Michael Kogan. Originally engaged in vending machines and jukeboxes, Taito became one of the pioneers of the arcade industry in Japan. In 1973, it released Elepong, one of the earliest Japanese-made video games, but it was in 1978 that the company forever changed gaming history with the release of Space Invaders. This title not only became a worldwide cultural phenomenon but also helped ignite the golden age of arcades.
During the 1980s, Taito established itself as a leader in innovative arcade experiences with titles such as Qix, Elevator Action, Bubble Bobble, Rastan, Chase H.Q., and Operation Wolf. These games combined unique gameplay mechanics with memorable design, earning lasting recognition. The 1990s further strengthened Taito’s reputation with the success of Puzzle Bobble (Bust-a-Move) and its celebrated shoot-’em-up series Darius.
In 2005, Taito was acquired by Square Enix, becoming its arcade and amusement subsidiary. Since then, the company has continued to preserve and revive its classic franchises through remakes, compilations, and modern sequels such as Bubble Bobble 4 Friends. It also remains a key player in Japan’s arcade and amusement center market.
Globally, Taito is remembered as one of the true pioneers of interactive entertainment. Its innovations, particularly Space Invaders, laid the foundation for the video game industry, while series like Bubble Bobble and Puzzle Bobble remain timeless icons that continue to reach new generations of players.
